Colorants

Products

The Colouring of Plastic: The basic colours (original colour) of most of the plastic that we use in daily life are white, yellowish or transparent. Other colours have to be added before or after the production process. At present, mainly 3 basic colouring methods are adopted:
Pigment
Compounding
Masterbatch
Vencaili® Biodegradable Masterbatches
Additive
All these methods are used with the materials and the colour are well mixed prior to the beginning of production. We also have various Additives supply.

Pigment is made by basic colouring powder and specially compounded colouring powder. Its advantages:
- Low price
- Short Production lead time
- High Flexibility
- Easy to store, reduce stock burden

As pigmenting has been used for a long time, it is a relatively primitive colouring method and has quite a number of defects:
The use of powder may cause pollution, and it is difficult to clean. The mixing ratio is low, so the colour has weak concealing powder.
The colour may have uneven distribution. Coloring powder cannot be used when producing opaque products.
The above situations are even more obvious when producing large–scale and high-quality products.
Major product includes:
- Tailor-made pigment
- Pearlescent effect
- Angle-oriented effect
- Metallic effect
- Phosphorescent Pigments
- Fluorescent Pigmen

Compounding is a mixture of material and colouring powder with extruder cutting into pallet form. Its advantages:
- Easy to use.
- Without the pollution problems of pigments.
- The process is easy to handle, and provides better the colouring powder diffusion.
It is often used by the production of demanding or large-scale products.
Nevertheless it also has its disadvantages:
- When being processed in local factory, large order quantity usually results in high stock cost but it is uneconomical for small order either. The Costs may be even higher when there is purging in the process of mixing colours.
- Increasing the burden of the warehouse stocking, and lowering its flexibility.
- The process, especially for the engineering plastic, inevitably alters the physical and mechanical natures of the plastic.

Masterbatch with the economic developments of countries, tremendous effort has been involving in the research and development of plastic materials and colourings. Today, the available choices of colouring materials are very broad and with different kinds of colours and categories.
The major colouring materials include:
- Masterbatch
- Pigment
- Colour Sand
- Pre-colour
- Liquid colourant
Nevertheless, masterbatch has the best overall performance among the other alternatives.
Masterbatch is a new development in recent years. It is a polymer with high concentrated colourants contained in the resin homogeneously. When added with different additives and materials, various types of masterbatch could be produced, such as anti-static masterbatch, heat resistance masterbatch, filler masterbatch, conducting masterbatch, anti-bacterial masterbatch and others with agriculture purposes.

Masterbatch is mainly composed by colourant, carrier and dispersing agent:
Colourant: It is the major ingredient in the masterbatch and is selected according to the particular nature of plastic.
Carrier: It allows colourant distribute more evenly and provides the pellet shape for the masterbatch.
Dispersion Agent: Its main function is to moisture the surface of the colourants, thus allowing better dispersion and stability inside the resin. In general, dispersing agent is a polyethylene wax.

Today, the most common scale of masterbatch is 4%, which means for 1 kg masterbatch, 25 kg resin can be coloured. Or, other scales can be used according to a specific need. Masterbatch is simple to use: with a right amount of masterbatch mixed with the plastic material in the mixing machine for around 3 minutes, and getting dried according to the requirements, the material will be ready to be directly processed. If suitable carrier and additive are used, masterbatch could be applied in various processed, e.g. blow moulding, injection, extrusion and etc.

Masterbatch not only brightens up the plastic materials with miscellaneous range of colours, it also has other advantages:

- Stability, high chance of preserving the original colour
- Fast colour change
- Environmental friendly
- Good dispersion
- Less effect on the resin properties
- Low scrape rate
- Lower cost (when comparing with compounding)

In today’s highly competitive market, various plastic-consuming industries, in particular the home appliances industry, are completed fiercely and globally as more international firms are trying to grab the opportunities which would be offered by China after joining WTO. In order to stay competitive, resources must be chosen very carefully and with the advantages of masterbatch, it is not hard to understand why it is getting popular.
Major products include:
- Tailor-made colour masterbatch
- Quali Black Masterbatch
- Quali White Masterbatch
